Sautee-Nacoochee Valley

Indian Mound

According to legend, the Nacoochee Indian Mound was the center of the ancient Cherokee town of Gauxule, visited by DeSoto in 1540 in his search for gold. This ceremonial mound is 190 feet long, 150 feet wide and 20 feet high. Ceremonial dances were performed in and around the Town House. In 1915 the mound was partly excavated by the Bureau of Ethnology of the Smithsonian Institution and the Heye Foundation of the American Indian.

Crescent Hill Baptist Church

This lovely gothic style church was built in 1871 by Captain James Nichols who served as a Major of a Confederate Cavalry Regiment. Originally, the affiliation of the church was Presbyterian, but now acts as a Baptist Church. He also built his impressive home next door, which was named "West End", because it resides to the west of the church.

Covered Bridge

This historic covered bridge was built on the Chickamauga Creek and is also known as the Stovall Mill Bridge. The mail was once delivered from the Sautee Post Office by horse carriage over the bridge. The covered bridge became useless in 1950, when Highway 17 was paved and the concrete bridge was completed. It is the shortest remaining bridge in Georgia, only thirty-three feet long. The Georgia Department of Transportation now maintains it as a park.

Nora Mill Grainery

The mill was constructed in 1876 by John Martin when he came to Georgia to mine for gold. Nora Mill Granary is a fully operational grist mill that sits alongside the Chattahoochee River in the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains that stone grinds and produces all kinds of corn and wheat based products such as grits, corn meal, pancake & waffle mixes, flours, biscuit & bread mixes, pioneer's porridge. It is located just South of Helen on Highway 75.
